Whether you are renovating or you are building a new home, you may be able to save significant money through a number of different government incentives, rebates and tax credits from the municipal, provincial and federal levels. While the information about these rebates may already be found in various government websites on the internet I have compiled this information in one convenient location.

Federal Tax Rebates (Single Family Homes Only):

Replace your heating system with:

   
- an ENERGY STAR® qualified gas furnace that has a 90.0% annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) or better $300 $150

Attic Insulation  
Grants listed reflect 100 percent of roof area being of one type. When the roof has more than one type (e.g. attic and cathedral), all applicable grants are pro-rated based on area type that is entirely insulated.

The maximum grant for an attic and cathedral/flat ceiling combined is $600.

Exposed Floor Insulation  
Insulate your exposed floor (minimum of 150
square feet is necessary) and increase all of its
insulation value by a minimum of RSI 3.5 (R-20).

A minimum of 20 percent of the basement's exterior total wall area must be insulated to qualify.

The grant is based on the percentage of exterior wall area insulated and does not include common walls between individual dwelling units.

The applicable grant for basement and crawl space combined is pro-rated on the type that is entirely insulated. The maximum grant for basement and crawl space combined is $1,000.

Basement Header Insulation  
Seal all of your basement header area and increase all of its insulation value by a minimum of RSI 3.5 (R-20). $100
Crawl Space Insulation Minimum Additional Insulation

Federal Home Renovation Tax Credit:

As part of the government's plan to stimulate the economy, a tax credit has been introduced for the 2009 tax year.

- The credit will only be available for the 2009 tax year and applies to eligible expenditures of more than $1,000, but not more than $10,000, resulting in a maximum credit of $1,350 ($9,000 x 15%).

Some eligible types of work include:

  • Renovating a kitchen, bathroom or basement
  • New carpet or hardwood floors
  • Building an addition, garage, deck, garden/storage shed, fence
  • Re-shingling a roof
  • A new furnace, woodstove, boiler, fireplace, water softener or water heater
  • A new driveway or resurfacing a driveway
  • Painting of interior or exterior of a house
  • Window coverings directly attached to the window frame and whose removal would alter the nature of the dwelling
  • Laying new sod
  • Swimming Pools (Permanent - in ground and above ground)
  • Fixtures – lights, fans, etc.
  • Associated costs such as permits, professional services, equipment rentals and incidental expenses.

Alberta Energy Rebate Program:

In the 2009 provincial budget, the Alberta government announced a new Energy Rebate Program, worth 36 million dollars. The program is administered by Climate Change Central and is summarized here.

Residential Toilet Replacement Program:

In an effort to conserve water, the city of Calgary has introduced a rebate, offered to individuals who are replacing their existing toilet with one which uses less water per flush. People purchasing eligible toilets may be entitled to a $50 rebate. Visit the City of Calgary Website for more information.
